The Cooke Varo-Panchro 14-42mm T3.1 is an incredibly obscure, ultra-rare vintage Super35 cinema zoom lens. Because of its scarcity, it very rarely crosses public auction blocks or open used-equipment marketplaces.
Based on current vintage cinema market valuations, a Cooke Varo-Panchro 14-42mm T3.1 in excellent, shootable condition is valued between $20,000 and $30,000 USD.
Factors Driving Its Value
-
The Scarcity: While its sister lens, the Cooke Varo-Panchro 20-60mm T3.1 (released in 1981), is relatively well-known and fetches around $23,000 to $26,000 on the used market, the wide-angle 14-42mm variant is significantly harder to find.
-
The "Cooke Look": Cinematographers highly covet vintage Varo-Panchros because they were explicitly designed by Taylor-Hobson to optically match the legendary Cooke Speed Panchro prime lenses. They offer a warm, flattering rendition, smooth focus roll-off, beautiful petal-shaped bokeh, and gorgeous flare characteristics without the clinical harshness of modern zooms.
-
Housing and Mechanics: If the lens has been fully rehoused by a company like TLS (True Lens Services) or Van Diemen to feature modern PL mounts and standard 0.8 pitch gears, its value pushes toward the absolute top of the range (and can sometimes exceed it depending on demand). Original factory-mount versions or units requiring a full mechanical overhaul generally sit closer to the $15,000–$20,000 floor.
Because transactions for this specific focal length almost exclusively happen privately through high-end cine brokers (like Duclos, Cine Marketplace, or FJS International), prices shift based entirely on how pristine the internal glass is.
CINEMA:
Whether Filming on ARRI Alexa 35, RED V-Raptor Digital Cinema or even ARRI LT Super 35 Kodak motion picture Cooke Varo-Panchro’s hold true to delivering unparalleled cinematic performance.
