1. The Meaning of the "B" Prefix

Before ARRI used unified serial blocks, they designated iterations of the Arriflex 35 system using letter prefixes.

• "No Prefix" or "A": Generally belonged to the original Arriflex 35 (Model I) and the Arriflex 35 IIA.

• "B": Explicitly denotes an authentic, factory-built Arriflex 35 IIB.

Why this matters: Many older 35 IIA cameras were upgraded by rental houses or third-party technicians to have IIB-style clear-glass viewfinders or updated movements. Because your camera has a factory stamped "B", it proves it left the Munich factory as a true, native IIB.

2. The Production Timeline

ARRI introduced the Arriflex 35 IIB in 1960 to replace the IIA, improving the camera with a completely redesigned mirror-shutter and a much-improved optical viewfinder.

Given ARRI's manufacturing numbers for that era, a serial number in the high 6000s (6809) indicates that this camera was manufactured in the mid-1960s (roughly 1964–1966). This was the absolute golden era of French New Wave, Italian Neorealism, and classic Hollywood location-shooting—a time when the handheld Arri 2B was actively revolutionizing how movies were made by breaking cameras out of heavy, immobile studio "blimps."
