CENTURY 2X EXTENDER MK1 - PL

The fundamental difference across the Zeiss Standard Speed generations lies in their mechanical usability. While the optics inside stayed largely identical, the housing physical designs evolved drastically from tiny, stills-style barrels into robust, standardized cinema housings. [1, 2]

MK I Housing (The "Tiny" Vintage Style)
Introduced in the 1970s, the MK I housings look and operate more like classic still-photography lenses than modern cinema glass. [1]
* Physical Size: They are incredibly small, lightweight, and narrow. [1, 2]
* Native Mounts: Built originally with Arri Standard or Arri Bayonet mounts. Most operational units found today have been modified with aftermarket PL mount adapters. [1, 2, 3]

* Gears & Fronts: They lack integrated focus or iris gears. The front diameters are un-standardized and tiny, meaning they require clamp-on or custom rings to utilize modern follow-focus systems and matte boxes. [1, 2, 3]

* Focus Rotation: Feature a very short focus throw (often only a 180-degree half-rotation). One side of the barrel displays imperial markings, while the opposite side displays metric. []

MK II Housing (The "True Cinema" Standard)
Introduced in the mid-1980s, the MK II housing was a ground-up redesign that established these optics as true, practical cinema lenses. [1, 2]
* Physical Size: The lens barrels are noticeably larger, heavier, and more durable, matching the rugged chassis style of the famous Zeiss Super Speed MK II series. [1, 2]
* Native Mounts: Manufactured natively with Arri PL mounts. [1, 2, 3]
* Gears & Fronts: Features factory-integrated 0.8 mod focus gears built directly into the housing. The front outer diameters were widened and standardized to 80mm, making lens changes on set incredibly fast. [1, 2]
* Focus Scales: Marked with distinct dual scales, though the focus rotation remained shorter compared to later iterations. [1, 2]

MK III Housing (The Refined Industry Peak)
Released in the early 1990s, the MK III mechanics represent the final factory housing polish from Zeiss before they shifted away from the Standard Speed line. [1, 2]
* Focus Orientation: The orientation of the focus engravings was rotated 90 degrees. This aligns the text perfectly upright on the side of the barrel so camera assistants and focus pullers can read the numbers clearly from a normal operating position.
* Large Font & Single Scales: Because the font size of the distance marks was vastly increased for visibility, Zeiss dropped the dual metric/imperial setup. MK III lenses were strictly sold as either metric or imperial individual models.
* Expanded Focus Throw: Features a heavily expanded, highly precise focus rotation (up to 330 degrees on certain focal lengths) for ultra-fine focusing adjustments. [1, 2]

The Zeiss Standard Speed MK2 lenses are iconic, vintage West German-manufactured cinema primes introduced in the early 1980s. Revered for producing a classic, filmic aesthetic on modern digital sensors, the set offers unified T2.1 apertures, an ultra-lightweight build, and flattering, organic image rendering

The Zeiss Standard Speed MK2 Set
The MK2 series improved upon the original MK1s by adding robust integrated focus gears and standard ARRI PL mounts (and later interchangeable lens options). [1, 2]
  • Core Characteristics:
    • Aperture: Consistent T2.1 across the entire set, offering a fast enough aperture for most lighting conditions while providing more than enough depth of field for easy pulling.
    • Filmic Aesthetic: These lenses take the "edge" off digital cinema sensors, offering pleasing skin tones, organic contrast, and beautiful out-of-focus bokeh.
    • Size & Weight: Small, compact, and typically weighing just around 1 lb each, making them ideal for handheld, Steadicam, and gimbal work. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Focal Length Highlights:
    • 16mm T2.1: Often features a specialized close-focus or macro capability.
    • 20mm T2.1: Distinctive for producing a unique triangular bokeh.
    • Wide to Mediums (24mm, 32mm, 40mm, 50mm, 85mm): The backbone of the set. These are incredibly sharp but not clinical, offering minimal breathing and low distortion.
    • Telephotos (135mm & 180mm): The 135mm is an industry workhorse, though the 180mm slows down to T3. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
  • Sensor Coverage: Designed for Super 35 (S35) film. While the 16mm and 20mm will vignette on massive Open Gate Full Frame sensors, many of the middle and longer focal lengths easily cover larger formats, particularly the 50mm and 85mm. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Century 2x PL Extender
A Century 2x PL Extender (or "doubler") sits perfectly between your PL-mount lens and the camera sensor, turning your primes into much longer telephoto options. [1, 2]
  • Focal Length Doubling: Instantly multiplies the focal length of the attached lens by 2. For example, your 85mm becomes a 170mm, and the 135mm transforms into a 270mm reach. [1, 2]
  • 2-Stop Light Loss: The physics of this magnification will cost you 2-stops of light. A T2.1 Zeiss prime paired with the Century 2x essentially becomes a T4.2 lens, meaning it performs best in well-lit or daytime conditions. [1, 2, 3]
  • Optical Quality: The Century Optics 2x features multi-coated, high-resolution optics, allowing it to maintain great sharpness without introducing unwanted distortion or chromatic aberration. [1, 2]
How They Pair Together
Combining the classic, warm look of the Zeiss Standard Speeds with a high-quality Century 2x extender is a tried-and-true industry workaround. It gives you extreme telephoto reach—up to 360mm using the 180mm lens—without sacrificing the vintage, flattering character of the Zeiss glass.
